Danger-ous Birth: NICU

Brett was admitted to the NICU with a stomach infection. He had to receive at least 5 days of anti-biotic. The first 24 hours were spent waiting on the results from a blood culture taken. We had to wait and see if it turned up positive, if it did things would be very serious and different measures would have to be taken. Luckily it was negative and we just had to wait for Danger's stomach to start feeling better. The first few days his stomach was so inflamed that he wasn't allowed to eat anything. All of his nutrients came from his IV. So by the third day he was extremely hungry and not very happy. Every day his stomach got better and his infection level went down.

We spent that whole week at the hospital. It was like life was at a stand-still. It was so hard to leave the hospital every night without my danger baby. We spent so much time at the hospital. Literally we were there all day. We left to eat and sleep. It was hard but we had some precious moments just holding Brett and having him all to ourselves.

Finally on Thursday June 23, 2011 we got to take our Danger Baby home. It was such a great day. We were all so happy and so ready to have him home.

Danger-ous Birth: Day 2

So my second day in the hospital was a lot harder than my first. Giving birth to Brett was easy, recovering from giving birth was HORRIBLE. I had an episiotomy, which is horrible and hurts and includes stiches where you don't want stiches. I could barely get out of bed without help from Jordan or nurses. Coming out of the epidural was hard on my body and I couldn't quite get my bearings. The first night every time Brett cried Jordan had to get up to take care of him. On top of all that I could not nurse!

The day was great. So many people came to visit and it was so nice to have all our friends come and spend the day with us. I didn't even get to hold Brett all day there were so many people! At one point pretty much the whole entire Jessee family was in our room.

At the end of the day I was so happy to just have my little family in the room. I finally got to hold Brett and Jordan sat next to me in bed. We put on some Sufjan and just enjoyed the moment.

During the day my nurse was constantly trying to help me nurse. Brett just wouldn't latch on. We were feeding him formula so that he could get some food since he wasn't getting any from me. When we did feed him he kept throwing it all back up. During the birth Brett had swallowed some amniotic fluid so the Dr. suggested we basically have his stomach pumped in order to get all the fluid out. It for sure didn't help. My nurse thought it was odd and said she didn't feel comfortable releasing us until he was eating better. So she suggested one more night in the hospital to monitor his progress and if in the morning he was either keeping food down or latching on. So we stayed and Thank God we did.

At around midnight the nurse came into the room with order for Brett to be taken to NICU. Some test results had come back irregular and they needed to admit him. This was by far the scariest moment of my life. To know that your baby is not ok, but no one can tell you why is horrible. We had to wait for the nurse to come in and explain why he was in there. About 30 minutes later the nurse came in and told us that some blood work came back elevated which was an indication that he was fighting an infection and they needed to conduct another test to see if the infection was in his blood stream. They had him hooked up to an IV and he was recieving antibiotics as we spoke. Then they told us he had to be in the NICU for a minimum of 5 days. When we finally got to see him I was feeling a mix of relief that he was sleeping and fear of why he had to be in there. I just wanted him to be ok, but there was nothing I could do to make him ok. That was a hard night, we just sat there taking turns holding him and trying to get some sleep. The next day wasn't much better. It was Father's Day and we were supposed to be taking our Danger baby home. Now we wouldn't.

Danger-ous Birth: Day One.

Well my baby is finally here! I can't believe I have this precious gift of life to enjoy every day. He is seriously the best thing to ever happen to me. I figured now is a great time to begin my blogger journey yet again. Hopefully this go proves to be successful.

Brett was born on June 17, 2011 at 6:28 p.m. The road was long and mostly hard.

My due date was June 14th and 2 days later there was still no Brett. I was beyond frustrated. I just wanted to be induced and be done with it. The weather had started to turn hot, and I was huge! I went to the doctor on Thursday and still there was no sign of improvement. We left a little dissapointed, and very much ready for our son to be here. My Brother in law, Jon Jon, had given us a call and told us that a dinner at Frugatti's had sent my Sis in law in labor and that he was going to pay for us to have a final date night without needing a babysitter. So I got all dolled up for the last time and enjoyed a wonderful meal with Hubby. Sure enought at 1:00 am that night I went into labor

I spent the whole night sitting in my rocking chair timing contractions and trying to sleep in between. Finally at 6:00 I woke up Jordan and told him it was time! We spent the next hour and a half timing the contractions and getting everything ready for the hospital. We got to the hospital around 9:00 and contacted our families.

Labor completely SUCKED! It was long and not easy. I finally got my epidural at around 1:00. OH MY GOODNESS. I must say I will never turn down and epidural. AMAZING. I finally couldn't feel any of my contractions and I was able to get some much needed rest. I started progressing really fast at that point. I went from 4 to 8 cm within 4 hours. That's pretty good for a first time delivery.

Finally at about 5:45 I began pushing. This was so difficult. I now know why they call it LABOR. It was crazy exhausting. But it was all worth it when my 7lb 14oz bundle of joy arrived. Unfortunately there were some complications. His head was too big so he had to be vaccumed out. (talk about traumatizing for him haha) and he was born with a fever (which we later found out was a sign of the infection to come)
Jordan got to cut the umbilical cord, and finally my baby was placed on me. I can't even begin to describe the joy I was filled with. It was literally the hardest and most rewarding experience of my life, thus far.

Here are some goodies from the day.

Jordan cutting the umblical cord.

Jordan getting to hold Brett for the first time.

So. Tired.

Well look forward to part 2 tomorrow!
